Of course, remembering camping can be a lot more romantic than actually sleeping under canvas as the storm threatens to blow down the tent.

I have to confess that this short story started off as an abseiling short story but somehow it developed with a mind of it’s own into a romance short story.

If male writers and female writers bring different mindsets to a piece of writing, can they ever truly put themselves in the shoes (high heeled or work boots) of characters of the opposite sex?

And what about the readers? Perhaps what is written might be interpreted entirely differently, even almost as if it was a different piece of writing, because of the male or female mindset of the person reading it?

So I was interested to read Laura Vivanco’s Teach Me Tonight, Musings on Romance Fiction from an Academic Perspective article about Regency Romance which gives a nice trawl around the subject.

I was particularly delighted to see a link through to Jo Beverley’s excellent short story The Christmas Wedding Gambit. I’ve been putting Christmas stories online for years because I see it as a better way of wishing a merry Christmas to my friends than sending Xmas cards which in my humble opinion are so commercialized these days. (Of course Jo Beverley may also send cards as well as penning her Christmas story. I’ve no knowledge about that.)

Perhaps I’ll try a Regency Romance next Christmas for my Christmas short story. So far, in my writing, I’ve just tended to set stories in modern times, sometimes with historical themes or flavours like old rural inns which are one of my favorite settings.

But here’s another slightly scary thought … I’ve heard passion can run high in these Regency Romances!

Alice is an ordinary housewife who receives an email from a forgotten lover from the past. With her heart pounding, she discovers that just looking at the attached photograph makes her feel she’s cheating on her husband again.

She has to decide whether she will meet her old lover and then whether she can withstand the temptation to be unfaithful.

Forgotten Flame in only seven chapters is a nice gentle romantic read about a subject to which many people will relate.

Read Rob’s review of Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris which is about a really sensuous read and (for friends or family that like a good literary read) a great Christmas present.

(Blackberries is also the subject of the free online short story romance by Donna Teller, ‘Blackberry Jam‘. It’s sad, whimsical and involves moorland, blackberries and broken relationships.)
